Q1. How did your career journey start? Or Who/What inspired you to start this business/ entrepreneurship?

I have liked innovating things since my childhood. It has been my driving force. I am a Mechanical Engineer by qualification. I did my Masters Degree from a private deemed university in Pilani, and later I started working there for sometime and during which I attended a conference on Intellectual Property Rights i.e. IPR. It really struck my chord. After attending that conference, I got to know that this was a field in which I could work with creative people and inventors. Actually, IP is a great mix where you get the opportunity to apply your knowledge of technology and law both. I realised that it was something I wanted to do. I was convinced that IP was a field which would always allow me to work on innovations and inventions. Immediately after that I started my career in Patenting and IP where I got a great opportunity to work with a US based IP Law Firm and my journey started.

Q2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and services here.
We are a specialised Intellectual Property and Commercial Law Firm. We protect innovations, inventions, creative work, and brands. We protect the innovation and creativity of individuals and corporates by patents, trademarks, copyrights, and design registration. We also enforce these IP rights for our clients. We help our clients to enforce their rights in the matters of software piracy, counterfeit goods, copying of brands. We guide entrepreneurs for their franchisee model and all legal aspects required to set up a franchise business. Hand holding is an important aspect of law practice and we do that for our clients in negotiating contracts, licensing their technology or any IP etc.

Q3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?

One of the major challenges that we are facing is awareness of Intellectual Property Rights. It is important to protect the novelty of an invention before filing the patents. However, due to lack of awareness many inventors approach us after disclosing the invention in the public domain. It is very painful to see that they approach filing patent applications after the invention is disclosed. Actually, an inventor should file a patent application first and the invention could be disclosed to the public. This is how the novelty of the invention can be protected. Such things can be controlled by raising awareness about Patents and IP in our country. Another challenge is the quality of inventions. There is a difference between inventions and innovations. Inventions can be patented, however, there is no protection to innovations. Our country really needs good inventions. Our innovators should push themselves so that their innovations fall in the category of inventions.

Q4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?

There are always challenges in any business. The first challenge we faced during the subprime crisis in the US in 2008. We lost many clients during that time and we realised that we should have clients from various countries across the world including India. I realised that it was equally important to start focussing on developing various verticals. We also realised the importance of having local clients. So, when there is a challenge related to local clients your international clients should help you and vice versa. Then there were challenges relating to setting up business processes, networking for the growth, and dealing with clients from various countries and cultures. However, I was always blessed with great mentors and friends who shared their experiences and guided me very well.

Q5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?

There is always a discovery period, it helps you discover a mission of your life. During my journey as an intellectual property attorney, after the first few years one of the technologies that we protected for our client was commercialised for a good sum of money. That was one of the happiest days of my life. I discovered my mission. My mission is to help the creators to protect their work and help them from the law point of view to commercialise that work. It might be a brand or an invention, however, the creator should be guided to protect it and commercialise it. Creators might be individuals who are working for corporates or working on their own business. I make a point to reach them and help them to protect and commercialise their intellectual property.

Q6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for the next five years?

We at our firm ‘AM Legal’ have quit ambitious plans. In the next five years we want to contribute to the development and growth of at least 100 companies. In the long run we want to contribute to the generation of IP worth 2000 Crores till 2030 for our clients. We are already in the process, and we got substantial success. We are working on the international front by providing our service to clients in India and abroad. We represent our clients in several countries of the world. We have set a goal of representing our clients in more than 100 countries of the world in the next 10 years. We have a plan to reach these goals. We are moving one step ahead every day.
Q7. How would you advise/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?

I always say to those who ask me such a question that if you want to start a new business and you love entrepreneurship then you should immediately embark on it. Even a delay of one day is not good if you have decided to be an entrepreneur. Most important is to understand your expertise and the offering to prospective clients. I see entrepreneurs who start their business but then they are in the process of identifying their offering, they keep on changing it by observing what others are doing etc. This is something which will put them into an unending loop. I think that the focus is important. If you have identified an area or a problem that you would want to solve and you have the ability to solve it better than others, then believe in yourself and continue the journey. There would be hard times but your expertise and quality is definitely going to push you ahead on the path of success.
